Join the Water

WOW #1

Materials:

Plastic bottle

Water

Bucket

Procedures:

1. Punch several holes close together at the bottom of the bottle.

(warm needle or a drill can be used)

2. Fill the bottle with water.

3. Observe how the water comes out of the holes.

4. Try and make the water streams join together into a single stream by using one finger.

5. Remove your finger from the water stream.

Questions:

1. What caused the three different streams of water to join together into a single stream.

2. What was the property of the water that allowed the joined stream of water to stay together after your finger was used?

Explanation:

The water flows out of the bottle in three separate streams until a finger is placed and the separate streams join into one. Once the finger is removed, the joined water stream stays together because of cohesive forces in the water.
